Richmond (VA)

Richmond is the capital of Virginia; during the American Civil War of 1861-1865, the city was the capital of the Confederacy of the Southern States. By the way, most of the battles at that time took place in Virginia. Of course, one should visit the State Capitol, this time all white and without a golden dome. The River Walk along the James Canal features a variety of successful murals and the Freedom Monument. The area around the Science Museum in the former Amtrak station is also interesting; “The Grand Kugel” is located here.

Richmond

For a long time, numerous statues of former Southern leaders who fought against the abolition of slavery were located along the magnificent boulevard Monument Avenue. Most of the statues were removed as racist symbols after the racial justice protests of June 2020 following the killing of George Floyd, most recently in 2021 the huge equestrian statue of Southern General Robert Edward Lee. Today, only the Arthur Ashe monument remains here – but he only fought with a tennis racket.
