Savannah (GA)

The Savannah Historic District, with its 22 park-like, checkerboard-patterned public squares and with more than 1,100 historic buildings, is considered the largest and most beautifully renovated urban area in the United States. The entire downtown area is largely still laid out according to the original plans of its founder James Oglethorpe from 1733; the City Market is the restored old center of the city.

The unique “squares,” decorated with flowerbeds, monuments, and fountains, are particularly famous for their mature trees. The mostly old live oak trees with hanging Spanish moss give the city a romantic and mystical atmosphere. Movie fans should definitely have a look at Chippewa Square; this is where the famous park bench scene from the movie “Forrest Gump” was filmed.

This special flair is complemented by a large number of well-preserved Georgian, Victorian and Greek classical-style houses, villas and churches lined up along the cobblestone streets. Historic cemeteries such as the Colonial Park Cemetery with graves from the time of the English colonies complete the overall work of art.

The Savannah River runs directly alongside the historic district and, with the restored River Street, offers a popular promenade with boutiques, restaurants and bars. At the eastern end of the well-maintained waterfront promenade stands the statue of the “Waving Girl,” a city’s landmark. At the western end the JW Marriott Savannah Plant Riverside District combines a luxurious hotel, art galleries and science exhibitions, restaurants, stores and a concert hall in a former power plant dating back to 1912.
