Historic Route 66, once the oldest paved highway to the West Coast along with Lincoln Highway, is simply iconic. Lovingly restored gas stations, historic motels and shiny chrome vintage cars still attract thousands of tourists every year – almost 40 years after it was officially abolished as an American highway. At the same time, however, it’s decline – especially in New Mexico and Texas – is more than evident: ghost towns along the old route, dilapidated supermarkets, or simply lots full of junk bear witness to a time long gone.
