Rickey, George

USA

* June 6, 1907 South Bend (IN)

† July 17, 2002 Saint Paul (MN)

George Rickey was fascinated by Alexander Calder’s mobiles from the very beginning; he has been one of the most important representatives of kinetic art since the middle of the last century. His sculptures move through natural forces, primarily wind, without any motors or external energy sources. The movements appear light and elegant, despite their often large, metal forms.

Rickey primarily used stainless steel and precision ball bearings to achieve balance, movement, and the reflection of light. His forms are geometrically reduced: lines, rectangles, squares, trapezoids, and other simple figures dominate his work. The elements, which move solely through the draft of the air, do not touch each other. There are more than 500 sculptures by the artist worldwide, including 250 in the USA and around 50 in Germany.
