You can find them in many German cities, but also in Greece, Italy, Malaysia and even China: the rust-red sculptures by Herbert Mehler. The artist works with Corten steel and constantly creates new figures that remind us of oversized flowers, vases, cacti or giant spools of thread. Although the works of art are often several meters high, they appear light and dynamic despite their ribs and slats (or perhaps just because of them).
Mehler’s sculptures are often designed for outdoor spaces and unfold their full effect in the dialogue with landscape, light, and surroundings. An exhibition of his works, which took place on the campus of the University of Frankfurt in 2022, was entitled “Growth – Body – Space” and characterizes the artist’s distinctive style quite well.
