Portland is the largest city in Oregonand is considered one of the most environmentally friendly cities in the US, with its many parks, bike paths and the MAX Light Rail. The city has earned a reputation for being “weird“; the slogan “KeepPortland Weird” has become a symbol of Portland’s quirky, creative and often unconventional way of life.
Portland
This is reflected in a lively coffee and craft beer culture, an alternative art and music scene and also in the more than 500 food carts that can be found throughout the city. Once a year, the World Naked Bike Ride takes place; unthinkable in other American cities. It is also home to Powell’s City of Books, the largest independent bookstore in the world. Last but not least, you should visit Voodoo Doughnut at least once in your life; this little pink store with its unusual creations is also part of the alternative culture of the city on the Willamette River.
When we started our “North America” adventure in 2009, Portland was our very first destination. We were overwhelmed by a huge river, mighty bridges and a world that was totally new to us. 15 years later, we came back; this time we were able to experience also the eccentric elements of this city. Here are our impressions from two very different visits:
