Dietrich Klinge’s abstract figures are characterized by a fragmented appearance with mask-like faces. They are reminiscent of earlier cultures, woodcuts or archaeological findings; the surface structure of his sculptures often appears to the viewer like weathered wood.
Many of the artist’s bronze sculptures are actually based on models that he originally created from wood. However, the coarse grain and carving marks that are common with wood are also retained in the metal version. Klinge devotes great attention to the depiction of the human hand, one of the most highly developed and delicate parts of the human body. For the artist, the hand represents both an expression of man’s creative power and the ambivalence of human activities.
