Pousttchi, Bettina

Germany

* 1971 Mainz

Bettina Pousttchi uses everyday objects from the urban spaces for her sculptures, such as barriers, street posts or bicycle racks, which she mechanically redesigns and reassembles. The objects, no longer caught in their original function, enter into a lively dialogue with their surroundings as modern sculptures.

Since 2019, the artist has been working with crash barriers, which she deforms, paints and then erects vertically; the most famous of these sculptures, which she calls “Vertical Highways”, is located at Berlin Central Station. The otherwise so inconspicuous grey, static crash barriers, which escape all attention in everyday life, are thus transformed into colorful, dynamic works of art.
