Pokorny, Werner

Germany

* October 11, 1949 Mosbach

† December 31, 2022 Ettlingen

Werner Pokorny mainly used wood and, in the outdoor area, Corten steel for his sculptures. The house in its elementary form was a strong source of inspiration and a recurring element in his works; for the artist it became a symbol of protection, home and human existence.

Even if the shape of the house often appears stylized and highly simplified, it always remains recognizable as Pokorny’s trademark: curved, stacked, as the top of a tower, tilted or rotated; the possibilities of presentation and expression seem endless. Openings, cutouts or perforations make the works appear lighter than the material steel would suggest. With his sculptures, the artist created a bridge between the world of living and the world outside, which he understood as a kind of allegory for the function of art in public space.
