Asheville is the largest city in western North Carolina; due to its location in the Blue Ridge Mountains, it is often referred to as the “Land of the Sky”. Its main attraction is the Biltmore Estate. Built by George Vanderbilt between 1889 and 1895, this historic estate has 250 rooms and is considered America’s largest private residence. At the same time, the Biltmore Forest School, North America’s first forestry school, was founded nearby – a milestone in American forestry.

With over 200 studios in the River Arts District, Asheville is considered a paradise for creative artists and art lovers. In terms of music, the city has been home to the “Mountain Dance and Folk Festival” since 1928, the oldest continuously running festival of its kind. And yet another superlative that makes the city attractive to tourists: Asheville has been named “Beer City of the USA” several times and has the second-most breweries per capita, just behind Portland, Maine.
On September 27, 2024, downtown Asheville was flooded to a height of two meters by Hurricane Helene. Streets were washed away, bridges destroyed and the interstates I-40 and I-26 impassable due to landslides. Electricity, mobile phone service and water supplies collapsed, leaving the city almost completely isolated from the outside world for five days.
