Stefan Rohrer focuses on the madness of mobility in the 21st century, using real cars, motor scooters, and toy models as his raw material and transforming them into seemingly weightless, distinctive works of art by cutting, deforming, and rearranging them.
His colorful and highly polished sculptures appear as if vehicles have been captured in a single moment of speed and dynamism in the midst of impact. Rohrer freezes speed, as it were – his vehicles are dynamic structures that curve elegantly or spiral into space, as if they had just flown out of a turn. Although cars normally embody mass and weight, his sculptures appear light, almost dance-like.
When the headlights protrude from the vehicle like eyes at a great height or flowers sprout from the car, this fireworks of paint and color is reminiscent of scenes from a comic book movie – and sounds such as “crack,” “boooom,” and “crash” involuntarily come to mind.
