The American artist Scott Burton is known for his public art installations, which often take the form of stone benches, tables, and other functional objects. His granite or bronze “tables” and “chairs,” which he referred to as “sculptural furniture,” challenge the distinction between furniture and sculpture and invite viewers to experience art in everyday life.
Burton’s works are used by people every day without them knowing that they are sitting on art – which was precisely the artist’s main concern. The Waterfront Plaza installation in Battery Park City, which he created together with Siah Armajani and other architects, is considered one of his most important works.
