Canadian artist Timothy Schmalz is particularly known for his Christian-inspired sculptures depicting biblical scenes, saints, and spiritual motifs. His goal is to make faith visible and tangible through art. Many of his works address compassion, poverty, refugees, and human suffering. His most famous work is “Homeless Jesus”, a life-size bronze statue of a homeless man on a bench who is recognizable as Jesus. By today, this sculpture is located in more than 100 cities worldwide.
Schmalz’s works are mostly situated in public spaces and are freely accessible, thus making the church visible and bringing its message to the outside world. Although his art is deeply rooted in Christianity, it addresses universal human themes such as dignity, hope, and empathy. As a result, his works can reach people of different religions and cultures.
