They are quite rare in Australia, these so-called “roadside attractions.” A thumbs-up next to the road or pencils in a large barrel are the exception. But if you look closely, you’ll find them – those little impressions that stay with you forever.
First of all, of course, are the kangaroos. They are smaller here than on the mainland, but just as numerous. And isn’t the little wombat, so lovingly cleaning its burrow, just adorable? Oh yes, you don’t come across a shoe-shining machine in the forest every day either. And what’s the best way to remember that most of this country’s inhabitants have British roots? Surely over a cup of Devonshire tea, with scones and clotted cream, very stylish, indeed.
