Visch, Henk

The Netherlands

* September 18, 1950 Eindhoven

Unlike many other artists, whose work features a recognizable leitmotif, Henk Visch’s work can’t be defined by any particular style or dominant theme. His oeuvre encompasses a wide range of formats and materials; for the artist, the material does not dictate the idea – rather, he selects the material to suit the concept he wishes to express.

When he focuses on the human figure, Visch abstracts it to a high degree. Faces are reduced to their essentials, heads are often oversized or very small, while limbs and arms are frequently missing entirely. A recurring element in his work is the quest for balance. His figures often seem to be balancing or struggling to remain upright, symbolizing humanity’s constant search for a balanced life.

Visch places great importance on defining his works unambiguously. He himself describes his sculptures as “offers of boundless spaces for thought,” which elude a single interpretation and deliberately leave room for the viewer’s own interpretations.
