Kröller-Müller Museum (NL)

The Kröller-Müller Museum in Otterlo – located in the heart of De Hoge Veluwe National Park – ranks among Europe’s most significant art museums. It houses one of the world’s largest collections of van Gogh; alongside these, visitors can find works by Seurat, Picasso, Mondrian, and other modernist masters.

Spanning approximately 25 hectares, the sculpture park is one of the largest in Europe and features over 200 works by internationally renowned artists. The sculptures are not placed in isolation but are embedded in the natural heath and forest landscape of the Veluwe – among trees, in clearings, or by small lakes. The way they are perceived changes with the seasons, depending on light, shadow, and vegetation. Visitors are even allowed to step on some of the artworks. The best-known example is Jean Dubuffet’s Jardin d’émail, a walk-on sculpture that feels more like a landscape than a traditional work of art.

What makes the Kröller-Müller Museum unique is not just the quality of the artworks, but its overall concept. Its setting within the national park turns even the journey there into a nature experience: Many visitors arrive on the free white bicycles, combining the enjoyment of art with a day spent outdoors. From the very beginning, the museum’s architecture was designed to mix art and nature. As you stroll through the exhibition halls, large glass walls offer constant views out into the surrounding landscape.

The pavilions in the sculpture park are also open on the side, bringing art directly into nature. It is precisely this combination of art, architecture, and a spacious sculpture park integrated into the landscape that makes the museum such a unique place. The gallery features a selection of the artworks.
