Minneapolis, Minnesota’s largest city, and Saint Paul, the state capital, form the Twin Cities, which are closely linked economically and culturally. Minneapolis is the more modern of the two, while Saint Paul is more historic and traditional. The Walker Art Center is one of the most important museums of contemporary art in the USA; and nearby, publicly accessible Minneapolis Sculpture Garden displays more than 60 world-class sculptures.
The city is nicknamed the City of Lakes; there are at least 13 large lakes within the city limits. It is also considered one of the most bicycle-friendly cities in North America, with hundreds of kilometers of bike paths winding through parks, along the Mississippi River, and through downtown. The Midtown Greenway is a car-free bike path that runs across the entire city.
Although winters in Minnesota are very long and cold, the city is well prepared with around 100 interconnected pedestrian bridges between the buildings in the city center. The Minneapolis Skyway System covers a total length of more than 15 kilometers and connects around 80 buildings. Despite the frosty winters, the city is considered one of the most livable cities in the United States due to its high level of education and a strong economy; in the Happy City Index 2025, it even ranks first in the USA, as the only city with gold status.
