New Orleans, the largest city in Louisiana, is located in the Mississippi Delta; about 160 km further south, the great river flows into the Gulf of Mexico. Hurricane Katrina, which caused devastating destruction in the southern United States in 2005, hit the city particularly hard: after two breaches in the levee system, up to 80 percent of the city was flooded with almost eight meters of water. Around 60,000 homes were completely destroyed in the disaster, with another 70,000 severely damaged. The population halved to around 225,000 in the following year, with just as many people leaving the city.
Twenty years later, there is no longer any sign of the disaster. The French Quarter, the heart of the city, attracts locals and tourists alike with its historic buildings, restaurants, and jazz clubs. The luxurious mansions in the Garden District appear in former glory, and even the more modest residential areas, such as the St. Roch District with its colorful wooden houses, invite you stroll around.
In the Warehouse District, visitors can enjoy the World War II Museum and Mardi Gras World, the Ogden Museum of Southern Art, and the Union Station, all located in former warehouses. At Tivoli Circle, formerly dedicated to Confederate General Robert E. Lee, the Lee Memorial was removed in 2017, as in many other cities. For art lovers, the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA) offers a special highlight: the Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden, featuring nearly 100 sculptures by internationally renowned artists in a beautiful park.
