Besthoff Sculpture Garden (LA)

The Sydney and Walda Besthoff Sculpture Garden is part of New Orleans’ City Park and is located right next to the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). Unlike most sculpture gardens, it is located within a mature existing landscape of pines, magnolias, and live oaks surrounding two lagoons. When Sydney and Walda Besthoff donated their first works to the art park in 2003, they had no idea that their donation to the city would develop into one of the most renowned art landscapes in the world.

Although the sculpture garden was expanded to twice its size in 2019, it covers just 13 acres (for comparison, the Laumeier Sculpture Park in St. Louis displays its works on 105 acres). However, the number of artworks far exceeds that of the other gardens; more than 100 sculptures are on display for the numerous visitors. Since the expansion, a 5,000-square-meter indoor pavilion has provided additional exhibition space, complementing the installations in the garden.

The works in the Besthoff Sculpture Garden represent the who’s who of the visual arts: from Pierre-Auguste Renoir to Henry Moore, Robert Indiana, and Claes Oldenburg to contemporary artists such as Tony Cragg and Katharina Fritsch, to name but a few. The following gallery shows almost all of the works; there are a lot of pictures, but it’s worth it – promise!
