Chillida, Eduardo

Spain

* January 10, 1924 San Sebastián

† August 19, 2002 San Sebastián

The Basque artist Eduardo Chillida is one of the most famous sculptors of the 20th century. His later works, in particular, are monumental, abstract sculptures with expansive structures, which can be found in numerous cities around the world. Many of his works interact with their environment; for example, famous “Peine del Viento” in San Sebastián features massive iron sculptures that interact directly with the sea, wind, and rocks. In this way, the forces of nature are not only depicted, but made tangible.

The Chillida Leku Museum near San Sebastián is perhaps Spain’s most beautiful sculpture park, displaying around 40 monumental sculptures made of iron, steel, and stone within a spacious park. The works are not placed on pedestals, but stand directly in the grass, among trees and hills. Each of these works is unique, since the artist hated reproductions.
