Snelson, Kenneth

USA

* 29. Juni 1927 Pendleton (OR)

† 22. Dezember 2016

Like his mentor Buckminster Fuller, Kenneth Snelson was interested in ‘tensegrity’, an artificial word combining the terms “tension” and “integrity.” His delicate sculptures based on this principle form a stable framework in which rigid tubes and rods (usually made of stainless steel) do not touch each other, but are connected only by flexible tension elements such as ropes and cables. The stability of the works is ensured exclusively by the tension between the elements, which are often used as recurring modules.

Snelson’s works are based on precise geometric and physical principles; despite their technical complexity, the pieces appear light, open, and dynamic. In this way, space and background remain visible, and perspective and shifts in view become essential components of the sculpture.
