Max Bill is regarded as the most important Swiss architect and artist of the 20th century. His works are strongly inspired by mathematical principles, in particular by geometric shapes and proportions such as the Fibonacci sequence or the golden ratio. His minimalist-looking sculptures are usually reduced to the essentials, with clear lines and smooth, precisely finished surfaces. As a representative of the concrete movement, he aimed for an art that refers only to itself, without symbolic or narrative content.
Many of Bill’s sculptures, for which he used stone, metal and concrete, consist of curved, interlocking or seemingly endless forms (e.g. Möbius strips) that suggest movement and continuity. They are often located in central places in public spaces and impress the viewer with their obviously effortless harmony between mathematics and art.
