Lüpertz, Markus

Germany

* April 25, 1941 Reichenberg

Markus Lüpertz  is one of the most important German painters and sculptors of our time; he is known for his eccentric self-portrayal and likes to call himself the “prince of painters”. His figures in public spaces are provocative and do not always meet with unrestricted approval. His Beethoven statue in Leipzig, for example, is disparagingly called “Knethoven” by the population.

Lüpertz’s massive bronze sculptures often show figures inspired by powerful mythological characters such as Poseidon, Mercury or Apollo. By deliberately distorting the proportions of the human body or overemphasizing certain aspects, the artist gives the archaic figures a new, contemporary expression. In this way, each sculpture tells its own story and opens up space for interpretation. It is this combination of mythological and contemporary elements that makes his works so unmistakable.
