Graham, Dan

USA

* March 31, 1942 Urbana (IL)

† February 19, 1922 New York

Dan Graham, who also worked in music, film and performance alongside the visual arts, repeatedly addressed the relationship of humans with their environment in his works. He became particularly known for his pavilions, glazed or mirrored aluminum or steel frame structures with a rather minimalist appearance.

The artist typically used semi-mirror glass (spy glass), which creates reflections, transparencies and superimpositions. Depending on location, movement and lighting conditions, perception changes; the artworks become an interactive counterpart to the viewer. Graham’s pavilions are not located in museums and are deliberately not just outdoor sculptures, but walk-in structures in public spaces and thus architecture and sculpture at the same time.
