Günter Tollmann, who began his career as a painter, became best known for his kinetic sculptures. A recurring basic element is the cylinder, typically made of stainless steel or a combination of plastic and steel, often brushed or polished to create reflective effects.
The sculptures, usually composed of numerous cylinders and arranged in multiple segments, are not rigid, but move even with a gentle breeze or touch. Their rotation creates ever-changing configurations, with sunlight reflecting off their smooth surfaces and casting varying reflections onto their surroundings. The artist himself referred to the works in this series as “Trees of the Future.”
Tollmann also worked with other basic geometric forms, such as tubes, beams, and angular elements. Many of his works were created specifically for public squares, schools, museums, and government buildings.
