Middelheim Museum (B)

The Middelheim Museum in Antwerp, Belgium, is best known for its 27-hectare sculpture garden, one of the world’s most significant sculpture parks. The museum’s collection comprises more than 400 works by modern and contemporary sculptors, dating from around 1900 to the present day, of which approximately 250 are on permanent display. This makes it the largest sculpture garden in Europe, welcoming 300,000 visitors annually with free admission.

The expansive park is characterized by a unique combination of world-class artworks, a natural garden landscape featuring trees, meadows, and paths, and architecture; art is experienced as part of the natural environment. Emerging from the Biennale Middelheim, which took place in the summer every two years from 1951 to 1989, works from the exhibition were continuously acquired over the years, thus expanding the permanent collection.

This also explains why the sculpture park focused for a long time on (classical) European modernism; approximately 75 percent of the exhibits are by European artists. Starting in 1990, the park also opened its doors to artists from other continents, with representatives from North American (such as Alexander Calder, Dan Graham, and Louise Nevelson) predominating. The gallery shows a selection of the artworks on view.
