Louisiana Museum of Modern Art (DK)

The Louisiana Museum of Modern Art in Humlebæk, about 35 kilometers north of Copenhagen, is best known for its unique connection of art, architecture, and landscape. Situated directly on the coast overlooking the Øresund, the museum incorporates the sea and nature into the visitor experience through the large glass facades of its modern pavilions and carefully aligned sightlines. With over 700,000 visitors annually, Louisiana is the most-visited museum of modern and contemporary art in Scandinavia.

A key feature of the museum grounds is the large sculpture garden; the collection of around 50 works includes pieces by artists such as Henry Moore, Alexander Calder, Max Ernst oder Jean Arp. What makes Louisiana special is the way the artworks are integrated into the landscape. The sculptures have been deliberately placed to interact with the museum’s architecture, the old trees, the lawns, and the view across the Øresund. Some works – such as Richard Serras The Gate in the Gorge – were designed specifically for their locations and are inextricably linked to the site.
