Der Hafen wurde zum Ende des vergangenen Jahrhunderts mit Milliardenaufwand in ein modernes Freizeitgelände mit Parks, dem Maryland Science Center, dem architektonisch beeindruckenden National Aquarium, dem American Visionary Art Museum und dem Top of the World Tower umgewandelt; heute ist der InnerHarbor die Hauptattraktion der Stadt. Größter Arbeitgeber ist die Johns Hopkins University.
